Horia Manolache, good friend of the Red Victorian, presents:

Portraits of homeless people as they are and as they dream to be.

I came to San Francisco in 2013 and the first thing I noticed was the high number of homeless people.

Photographically, it is an over exploited and in some circles, obsolete subject. A prior experience with editorial portraits made me ask myself “What is the criteria for a person to have their story in the magazine?”. This thought led me to imagine what it would be like to show them as successful people, depicted as what they dreamed to be.

This project begun on San Francisco’s streets as I began to become familiar with the people that I saw everyday. I began to speak with them, their story is just like yours and mine. Some of them followed the path created by society and others created their own path. I wanted to explore what brought them here and how would they look if life had led them down a different path? My series of photos may offer some answers to these questions.

The project is still in progress but I chose to exhibit eight diptych style pieces at The Red Victorian Hotel in order to thank them for their invaluable support and to raise money for the homeless people in the photos.

Two thirds of the money raised will be donated to the people I photographed for this project. The Red Victorian is also donating 50% of the event proceeds to “Taking it to the Streets” a local Haight St nonprofit that helps youth on haight st find meaningful work and get off the streets for good. https://www.facebook.com/takingittothestreetssf
