In My Dreams, I Fly

Fri Jul 14 7 PM until Mon Jun 19 10:30 PM , Red Victorian

Organized by Asya Abdrahman

Please join us for a new exhibition at the Red Victorian! In My Dreams I Fly will feature local artist Tatiana Rivas and her creative artworks. Her works vary from printmaking to painting each telling an autobiographical-like story. These reflect her life and outside issues in which she combines the medium and her viewpoint to convey a critique and analysis about the world around her. Art sets her free from all limitations. As expressed by Rivas: “Art lets me express the chaos in my soul, brings me calmness, and the freedom I need”.
Art making to her comes naturally as though it is a necessity. While for others there is the air that breathes life into us, but for Rivas it is art that nourishes her life.
Visitors will be able to experience an emerging artist’s journey to break into a contemporary art world.

About the artist:
Tatiana Rivas was born in 1985 in San Francisco, California. Growing up in a city beautified with murals and other street art, strongly inspired and influenced her to pursue a career in art. She just graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History and Studio Art. Tatiana’s art has a strong focus on printmaking, painting, and sculpture. She often uses personal imagery from her accident such as x-rays, scans, and photographs. Her art reflects her personal experiences living as a person with a disability. Her art also examines sexual politics and rape culture as well as drug culture through a funny, ironic, and at times provocative lens.

This exhibit will showcase her unique perspective and artistic range from minimalistic doodles and line drawings to ordinary objects with her twist. After enduring a life changing injury, Rivas was able to refocus her life on her first love; art. Subtle influences of her life living as a person with a disability can be seen in her work. This exhibition of selected pieces show the versatility and resilience of both Rivas’ artistic range and character. Art is her greatest tool that she used to rewrite her story and where in a world where most walk, she flies.

Curated by Jeanette Alanis
Jeanette Alanis, a Latinx born and raised in Richmond, CA. She graduated with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Art History with a minor in Latina/o Studies. She currently aims to take a step further into the art world as a amateur curator.

This exhibition was inspired by both curator and artist recent graduation accomplishment from San Francisco State University. From the University they received their Bachelor’s of Arts with goals to break into the contemporary art world thus the exhibit seems fitting as a first step outside of an academic setting.
