"Forget the damn motorcar and build cities for friends and lovers" -Lewis Mumford
What would a city fit for friends and lovers be like? We often have opportunities for lectures and reflection around how the future could be, but few opportunities to build the world we want to live in.
Join Other Futures Design Group for a chance to craft the future we want. This Build Day's theme is "Utopic Urbanism(s)" dedicated to creating semi-permanent and permanent interventions in the Bay Area. This event is welcome to all skill levels, from those with a passion, to architects, designers, programmers, engineers, anthropologists, academics, etc.
Friday will commence with an idea generation workshop and skill share from 7-9pm. Saturday we'll meet at 10am to build and implement our visions. Come for as much as you can!
Other Futures Design Group (OFDG) is a working group that is committed to designing artifacts (architecture, furniture, relationships, terminology, ideology, narratives, etc.) for different social formations. Viewing society through a social constructionist lens—that is, as “a dialectic phenomenon . . . that it is a human product, and nothing but a human product, that yet continuously acts back upon its producer” (in the words of Peter Berger), OFDG intends to intervene at the level of the externalized environment (domestic, urban, social, familial, media, cultural and narrative environments), imagining, designing and producing fixtures that facilitate different kinds of social, political and economic relations—relations we hope may aggregate into ‘other worlds’ that are better suited for (post)human life.
